Workshop: Wood Carving Art from N. Africa & the Maghreb
Hamid Lafer (Algeria / France)
In the tradition of Algeria, and of many regions of the Mediterranean in general, every house had a large chest, where they kept their valuable objects, their precious clothes, textiles and money. This chest was ornately decorated. The owner would call the craftsman, when the house was still on the foundations, and he would constract the chest on the spot. Then the walls of the house were built around the chest, and it remained forever there. Furthermore, when the patriarch of the house passed away, he was buried in the chest.
Hamid Lafer is a wood carver specializing in chest art, with exhibitions in Algeria, France and elsewhere. He will show us in the workshop the construction and decoration of traditional chests, with elements from the woodcarving art of North Africa & the Maghreb.

How can a crowd co-exist? What are the elements that make it an ensemble? Which are the bounds that keep it together and what can break it apart? The meaning of the ensmble has no positive or nefgative sign. Some look for it, some are afraid of it, some need it to manipulate it or for their loneliness. Ensembles are everywhere : in music, sports, politics, they have a long story in the theatre (spacially) and they never stop to be evolved.
